montecassino and pompeii

today we went to montecassino and pompeii. montecassino is a monastery on the top of a mountain in cassino, italy. it's really close to naples. pope benedict founded this monastery and it has actually been rebuilt many times because it has been destroyed. it's really beautiful and ornate inside. my favorite part was the mosaic chapel. literally every single part is covered in mosaic tiles. the pictures do not do it justice at all. the gold is beautiful! the best.

there's a statue of saint benedict in the center when he died

after montecassino was pompeii. pompeii was a town under mount vesuvius that was completely buried by a volcano. this volcano is still active today, but isn't expected to erupt any time soon. but vesuvius erupted for a total of 3 days straight and covered the city in dust, ash, and gas. the city wasn't recovered until about 200 years ago when it was found underneath the ground. excavations have been going on ever since and they have found the entire city of pompeii lying beneath the ground. it's so interesting!

the streets had these tiny white stones in them which acted like reflectors at night so you could see the road.
so smart
me, cydney, and courtney being creepy
the skeletons from pompeii were actually put in a cast to show the positions the people were in when they died
they found many skeletons in the actual position that they died. this one was covering it's mouth and protecting it's eyes.
more pottery. you can see another human cast on the shelf
they did a great job of preserving this autogrill

the courtyard of where the thermal baths were
they were like country clubs. this is the area where the men played sports and worked out, then they got in the thermal baths
inside the cold thermal bath
they have a million stray dogs at pompeii. people just drop them off here because they know they'll get fed here by the tourists. you can actually adopt them, they all have collars and a number. there's a website to adopt a dog from pompeii. but they're laying around everything.
when the romans would be in the hot thermal bath they would splash cool water on themselves and the floor was hot so the mist would rise to the ceiling. in normal rooms the precipitation on the ceilings drip down and hit the people in the room, but this room has ridges so that the water will run down the sides and not drop down on the romans. so smart.

this says "beware of the dog" in latin
italians still use this exact sign today to warn people about their dogs

they had this big stones because the streets were muddy back then so the people needed to be elevated off of the muck. but there are 3 so that the donkeys and wheels of the carriages could fit through
